Mozia Grillo Sicily DOC Tasca Conti d'Almerita

The Whitaker Estate is located on the ancient Phoenician island of Mozia, off the coast of Marsala. Small but incredibly rich in historical evidence, Mozia boasts a microclimate in which the Grillo grape expresses all its vital force. The vineyard is in a splendid position, surrounded by archaeological sites and near a brackish pond where in ancient times people used to fish with casting nets. Here the destinies of two families, Whitaker and Tasca d'Almerita, are intertwined in the frame of an ecosystem where the vine has long played an important role. The first planting of vines in Mozia dates back to the early nineteenth century, when the British, arriving from nearby Marsala, identified pedoclimatic characteristics very favorable to the production of grapes.

The soils of the island of Mozia derive from seabed of marine origin. They are sandy and loose soils. The presence of limestone is important, which causes an alkaline reaction of the soil (pH 8.2) and which influences the aromatic characteristics of the grapes.

The depth of the earth allows an adequate development of the sapling. Long pruning, “Marsala-style bow”, is the most appropriate for the Grillo grape, considering the low fertility at the base of the shoot. The harvest, slightly anticipated, preserves some points of acidity to maintain the freshness of the sip and the longevity, which the white of Mozia has been able to demonstrate over the years.
